Efficient nitrogen generation solution for waste management specialists

Thalia Waste Management operates cutting-edge waste technology available across their four UK sites, whilst encouraging both households and organisations to invest in reducing, reusing, recycling and recovering resources.

Thalia’s processes include everything from mechanical and biological treatment, traditional burn energy from waste and material recycling technologies to in-vessel composting, advanced thermal treatment, innovative small-scale energy from waste and anaerobic digestion.

In order to run these important processes, Thalia requires an efficient and reliable power supply – which is why a compressed air system is a great solution for them, specifically at Thalia’s Milton Keynes site in Buckinghamshire. Operations on this site also require nitrogen gas input, however, relying solely on bottled nitrogen deliveries alone did result in Thalia experiencing hassle and unnecessary expenses.

The Brief

Considering this, Thalia Waste Management were seeking an effective solution to fulfil the nitrogen that they require on site, as well as a reliable compressed air system service provider to maintain their existing system for optimum efficiency moving forward.

Our Solution

Direct Air visited Thalia in Milton Keynes to understand their requirements in more detail. Ray Cooper, Facilities Manager at Thalia explained that the nitrogen’s primary use is for the inert gas to blow across instruments for cleaning purposes. After discussing nitrogen specifications, the Oxywise N35 on-site generator was provided to Thalia by Direct Air – producing nitrogen with 99.999% purity, at 29.2 m³/hr.

The Oxywise N35 on-site generator will run alongside some bottled nitrogen for the time being, with the final solution to remove bottled nitrogen completely from Thalia’s processes in the near future.

Having the ability to produce nitrogen on-site and on demand is a more modern approach that places the customer in control. The continuous supply of consistent purity also ensures that Thalia are able to meet their regulatory obligations in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

Alongside the supply and installation of their new nitrogen generator, Thalia also entrusted the maintenance of their whole compressed air system with Direct Air as their new professional service provider. As a result of regular maintenance and service checks Thalia can now ensure that their compressed air system operates at peak performance, reducing the risk of costly breakdowns and unscheduled downtime.

Ray Cooper, Thalia Waste Management’s Facilities Manager commented:

“We decided to opt for this nitrogen generation solution with Direct Air as it proved to be a good solution for us. We’re also happy that the air compressors and dryers service and maintenance contract is now with Direct Air. I’d like to mention that Ivana has been great throughout the entire process.”

Ivana Becarova, Sales Engineer at Direct Air commented:

“Thalia have been great customers to work with on this project, I’m thrilled that we’ve been able to provide the company with the perfect solution for them and I look forward to continuing working with them. Ray’s good communication throughout the job made the process run as smoothly as possible!”
