Meggitt Aircraft Braking Systems (MABS) provides a host of products and services specifically tailored to the aerospace industry including the repair, replacement and overhaul of aircraft tyres for leading airlines.

The brief

MABS previously operated a nitrogen generator on a contract basis from a rental supplier to service their tyres however, with throughput often exceeding the maximum capacity of the system and booster pressure limitations, the company needed a solution to help them service the more demanding tyres with greater ease.

Our solution

Direct Air installed two Parker Domnick Hunter MAXIGAS108 units were specified to provide MABS with a peak flow rate of over 70 Nm3/h at better than 2% maximum remaining oxygen content and a 40 barg maximum outlet pressure. Operating at normal factory production flow demand, the nitrogen quality is better than specified (better than 0.1% O2).

MAXIGAS generators make nitrogen from compressed air via the pressure swing adsorption (PSA) method using carbon molecular sieve (CMS) regenerative technology. They offer superb reliability and efficiency due to a constant, controlled flow and pressure and are outstandingly cost-effective with an exceptionally low lifecycle ownership cost. MAXIGAS also offers MABS 100% standby reliability, a welcomed attribute of which the previous system did not provide and eliminates inconvenient system failures, wasted time waiting for cylinder deliveries and consequential space provisions outside the building.

The system installation was scheduled and proficiently completed over one weekend which limited downtime and successfully enabled production to resume the following Monday morning.

Roy Deakin, Head of Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul at MABS commented:

“We are very pleased with the MAXIGAS system from Parker Domnick Hunter. Since installation, it has worked very efficiently and allows us to better service the tyres which require a greater volume of nitrogen and increased throughput. We look forward to enjoying the benefits of payback on our capital purchase over the lifetime of the system.”

Managing Director at Direct Air, Allan Dolby commented:

“Meggitt Aircraft Braking Systems are one of our most valued, longstanding customers. It was therefore essential that the nitrogen generator solution offered by ourselves provided the quality and reliability to satisfy their needs. The MAXIGAS system has proven to fit their requirements perfectly and meets all of the criteria of the specification. We are very pleased with the installation that was carried out over just one weekend with minimal disruption to them.”
