Food & Beverage

As the food and drink industry is the biggest manufacturing sector in the UK, there are many regulations and standards that must be adhered to.

In an increasingly competitive market, products manufactured must meet the highest quality standards as even the slightest traces of oil or contaminants can result in polluted product batches and the risk of health hazards for consumers.

Whether you’re dealing with dairy or crisps, beer or water, compressed air that comes into contact with food and beverage must be controlled in accordance with ISO 8573-1 and ISO 12500.

Typical uses of compressed air in the food and beverage industry include:
  • Product handling
  • Food processing
  • Food filling machines
  • Fluid pumps
  • Cooling and spraying
  • Food packaging
  • Air knives
  • Preservation and sterilisation
  • Bottling
  • PET bottle blowing
  • Clearning air
  • Fermentation
  • Food storage
Nitrogen Packaging

The second a product leaves the production line; the countdown begins on the products lifespan for sale and consumption. Nitrogen is the most cost effective and efficient industry solution for a company’s packaging needs to maintain freshness, increase shelf-life and reduce risk of contamination.

Nitrogen Generation

Oil Free Air

Do you know what’s in your food? We can assure you that consumers won’t want a side of oil with their product, whether it be cheese, coffee or chocolate. Oil-free technology reduces the risk of contamination and provides ISO 8573-1 Class 0 Compressed Air, so you can focus on what matters – making your food the best on the market!

Oil free air

Filtration

Oil free air can also be achieved in systems that have oil lubricated compressors installed. Depending upon the class of air required Direct Air can advise on how oil free air can be delivered to your system.

Air Treatment

Air Quality

If the compressed air system has not been designed for your industry specific requirements, it has potential to cause major problems including spoiled products and unplanned downtime. We offer advice about your current compressed air system and provide solutions to achieve the quality you require.

Compressed Air Quality Testing

What air quality do I require?

The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) sets three such standards, ISO 8573, ISO 12500, and ISO 7183.

Which standards you should apply will depend on the specific contaminants your aim to remove and the purification equipment you will rely on to do so. Compressed air typically has three main contaminants which are water, particles and oil.

At Direct Air, we offer advice about your current compressed air system and provide quality solutions to ensure you achieve the air quality your business requires. To achieve the stringent air quality levels required for today’s modern production facilities, a careful approach to system design, commissioning and operation must be employed.

Can I generate my own nitrogen on site?

Absolutely! And there are multiple benefits that come with generating your own nitrogen on site as opposed to having liquid nitrogen delivered to site…

  • Supply on demand
  • Low operating costs
  • Environmental responsibility
  • Improved safety
  • Nitrogen purity

Direct Air are experienced in providing Nitrogen generation equipment for many industrial applications. Here are a few examples:

Food packaging

Residual oxygen within a package promotes bacterial growth and oxidation, which can compromise quality and shelf life. Using nitrogen minimises the levels of oxygen present, therefore preserving quality and improving shelf lie. This is particularly relevant to coffee processing, meat packaging, dried foods processing and lettuce packaging.

Beverage applications

Using a nitrogen blanket during beverage storage, pre and post bottling, prevents the growth of bacteria and other microbes. Another use is purging air from pipes and hoses prior to bottling and to ensure oxygen is not introduced during transport. It can also help to preserve taste and freshness.

Why are oil-free compressors a good solution for the food & beverage industry?

Oil free compressors are the perfect solution for applications requiring the highest air quality, resulting in oil-less air for your end-product and production processes. Air purity is critical for many applications where even the smallest drop of oil can cause product spoilage or damage the production equipment, resulting in potential unplanned downtime.

Many manufacturers in critical applications industries choose ISO 8573-1 Class Zero oil-free compressors that provide clean, 100 percent oil-free air. However atmospheric conditions can lead to oil vapour being present in the air generated from an oil free air compressor. Therefore, additional filtration may be necessary for the system as a whole or point of use depending upon the application.

There are many options available to ensure your production runs smoothly and to industrial standards, and Direct Air are happy to advise on what would be the ideal solution for your circumstance. Direct Air can advise on the most suitable means to deliver an acceptable level of oil free compressed air from your existing or new system.
