Ambient Cooling

One of the key benefits of choosing Direct Cooling Solutions is the wide range of ambient cooling equipment available to our customers, specifically industrial sized coolers for large warehouses or manufacturing facilities – we have the equipment to meet your needs!

Types of Coolers

The ambient cooling products that Direct Cooling can offer range from dry air coolers, adiabatic coolers, free coolers and cooling towers.

Dry Air/Air Blast Coolers

We can provide various orientations such as horizontal, vertical, V, or half V type units to suit your specific site space requirements and are always happy to visit site and advise on the best solution for your application.

Our range of dry air coolers, which are also known as air blast coolers can provide cooling capacities from 10kW to 10,000kW+ when including multiple units within a modular system.

They offer an extremely energy efficient solution when you only need to provide a constant fluid temperature above the ambient conditions. They can achieve a fluid temperature that is only 3°C above the dry bulb ambient temperature. For example, if the summer temperature within your location reaches a maximum of 35°C, the dry air cooler will always be able to maintain 38°C fluid to your process.

They do this by transferring the heat from the fluid that passes through the copper tubes within the heat exchange coils, to the air that passes over the heat exchange coils from operation of the fans on the cooler and this air is then discharged to atmosphere.

Our units can be configured with many control panel and fan options, such as inverter control, EC fans, low noise, or blow through fans for longer life on high fluid temperature applications and many other options such as integral pump / tank sets, coil treatment for aggressive environments, local fan isolators, extended legs and coil inlet filters.

Adiabatic Coolers

Our units can be configured with many control panel and fan options, such as inverter control, EC fans, low noise, or blow through fans for longer life on high fluid temperature applications and many other options such as integral pump / tank sets, coil treatment for aggressive environments, local fan isolators, extended legs and coil inlet filters.

Direct Cooling Solution’s range of adiabatic coolers have the ability of providing cooling capacities from 10kW to 10,000kW+ when including multiple units within a modular system.

They work in much the same way as a dry air cooler for the majority of the year, but they also come fitted with a mains cold water adiabatic spray bar system that is the final stage of cooling. This is only activated during the warmer times of the year, whereby it emits a mist of water that evaporates into the air stream and typically reduces the air on temperature to the heat exchange coils by 12°C lower than the dry bulb ambient temperature for UK conditions. For example, if the summer temperature within your location reaches a maximum of 35°C, the adiabatic cooler will be able to reduce the air on temperature to 23°C and maintain 26°C fluid to your process.

Our units also come as standard with a UV sterilisation system and have been developed in conjunction with advice given by the Health & Safety Executive and can be configured with many control panel and fan options, such as run / standby UV system, inverter control, EC fans and many other options such as integral pump / tank sets, coil treatment for aggressive environments, local fan isolators, extended legs and coil inlet filters.

Free Coolers

With integral 3 way control valves, ambient and water temperature sensors connected to the free cooler control panel, our units give a ‘plug and play’ low maintenance operation and since they minimise chiller run times, they also help to reduce overall maintenance costs, increase reliability and system resilience.

Our range of free coolers can be matched in size to any chiller cooling system that we provide or retrofitted to your existing chiller system. They are a fast and effective way to reduce energy costs and carbon footprint on refrigerated, process water cooling applications.

They are the smart choice for both the environment and company finances, with an outstanding Return of Investment that can achieve payback in as little as six months.

Since the EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) of a free cooler is far greater than that of standard chillers, their implementation can save massive amounts of energy compared to the traditional use of refrigerated equipment, especially during autumn, winter and spring. Chillers can typically be partially or fully offloaded for up to 90% of the year. This is achieved by utilising our low energy, dry air cooler and Free Cooling technology which can partially or fully offload the chiller depending on ambient air temperature.

Cooling Towers

As well as our induced draft open circuit cooling towers, we can also provide forced draft open circuit and closed circuit options for both forced and induced draft as well. Our units can be configured with many control panel, fan, pump and material options to suit your requirements.

Our range of cooling towers can provide cooling capacities from 100kW to 100,000kW+ when including multiple units within a modular system. They offer the best footprint per kW of any cooling product that we offer and so can be the ideal solution when space is at a premium.

As an example, our induced draft open circuit cooling towers can achieve a fluid temperature that is only 3°C above the wet bulb ambient temperature. If the summer temperature within your location reaches a maximum of 35°C dry bulb / 22°C wet bulb, the unit will be able to maintain 25°C fluid to your process.

This is possible as the warm water from the process is returned to the water distribution system at the top of the tower. The water is distributed over the wet deck fill pack by means of large opening nozzles. Simultaneously, air is drawn in through the air inlet louvers at the base of the tower and travels upward through the wet deck fill opposite to the water flow. A small portion of the water is evaporated which removes the heat from the remaining water. The warm moist air is drawn to the top of the cooling tower by the fan and discharged to the atmosphere. The cooled water drains to the basin at the bottom of the tower and is then pump back to the process.
